Murray is referred to as the Hub of Salt Lake City and hosts the annual Salt Lake County Fair. During the Great Depression, Murray took advantage of various federal projects, which led to the development of many parks throughout the city—including 12 acres of fairgrounds. In 1977, Murray was designated as a Tree City USA. This program national recognizes cities for urban and community forestry. There are certain requires the community has to meet, such as having a tree department, community ordinance for tree care, an Arbor Day observance, and so on.
